Oil Rig Monitoring : Feasibility Study Overview

During the lifetime of an oil well, a number of injection/production activities take place. The latter are responsible for volume/mechanical changes of the surrounding stratum which may impair the structural integrity of the well and eventually lead to well downtime, damaging spills or hazardous blowouts.

A list of the most typically encountered mechanisms leading to a well breach would include: Injection/Thermally-Induced Strain Deformations, Casing stressing due to undesired hydraulic fracturing, Corrosion, Shearing along a pre-existing zone of reduced strength. The ability to monitor the well performance along these recovery operations and gain awareness of potentially dangerous conditions is therefore crucial.  Our winning proposal combined sensing, data mining/processing and engineering simulations to forecast potential failure and issue appropriate warnings to the operator.
